8). Favorite restaurant and what do you order
there?
At the Soul Vegetarian in Chicago, I like the salad with
Prince dressing; I actually order the dressing and throw
some salad under it.
9.) If you have changed your diet or eating habits
in the past five years, why did you do it? How have they
changed?
My diet has changed a lot but I'm still searching. I
became a vegetarian gradually, over four years, not intending
to be one at first. I stopped eating pork, then beef. I
met Dick Gregory and began living more holistically and
naturpathically. I said, if I was going to be one then I
should start living like it. Since then I've been on a quest
to see how I should be living optimally and dealing with
my own vices.
10.) Do you use any foods to help with your beauty
regimen?
If so, what are they? - Lemons are my friends. When I'm
bad, my skin breaks out and lemon works great as an astringent
and healing scars; it's very natural bleach. Cucumbers feel
great on the eyes; I don't do it with any regularity ...
I don't buy it to specifically use it in a cosmetic manner,
which seems a little wasteful, but if they are here... I'm
a back-seat chemist. I try to recreate a lot of stuff I
buy. Orange peel or oil makes a good cream when using aloe
vera. I squeeze orange peel oil or juice into it; and I
love that cream.
11.) Who taught you how to cook? -
My Grandma. As I got older, I taught myself; but the
basic lessons are from my grandma. From her, I learned to
love the kitchen and love to cook. She has a set of cookbooks
that I treasured and felt honored when I got to borrow one
them. Now, I have my own set.
12.) What's your favorite song that talks about
food or uses food in the title or lyrics?
Sade...What's that song where she sings, "Sweet
as cherry pie"? ("Cherry Pie" from the "Diamond
Life" album)
13.) If you could be a spice which one would you
be? -
They are all so excellent; but I'd chose clove. It's
very good for you, which people don't know. It smells really
good. I was thinking the other day about what I miss about
eating meat and why. I thought it was looking forward to
the holidays and having a ham on the table and I hated it,
but loved pineapple, and we used cloves to hold them and
the cherries on the ham and that what's made ham good. That
was the only time we used cloves. It's a unique, spice,
fragrant and medicinal. It has a lot of uses that other
spices don't have.
14.) Biggest cooking disaster?
If it's burnt, I cooked it. My mind doesn't focus on cooking
well. I like the idea of the raw diet; you don't have to
cook. I'm notorious for leaving the room, and remembering
that I was cooking something when I get to where I'm going.
I will sit and watch something burn. I'll be watching the
pot saying, this looks good; look it's curling up; I'll
burn the whole pot `til the handle falls off.
15.) What's more important food or sex?
Food. If you haven't eaten you won't have the energy
to have sex. So, both are required.
Berry Delicious Tangy
Sorbet
1 cup frozen organic blueberries .........................1
cup frozen organic cranberries
1 cup frozen organic raspberries .........................2
tablespoons organic maple syrup
1 cup water ...........................................................1
teaspoon organic vanilla extract
1/4cup fresh strawberries .....................................1
teaspoon organic maple syrup
4 sprigs fresh organic mint
Pour frozen berries into a blender. Add syrup and vanilla.
Frappe the mixture for a few seconds at a time. Stop to
add water (1/2 cup at a time) and stir ingredients. Repeat
until all of the water is in and the mixture seems even.
Be careful not to over-mix or you will have a liquid better
suited for Popsicles. Place in freezer for at least 20 minutes
for a more solid consistency. Scoop into dessert cups and
garnish with mint leaves. (Don't forget to eat the mint.)
Makes 2 to 4 servings.
