By now most of us know the horrible story of the genocide in Rwanda. A similar situation exists right now in the Darfur region of the Sudan. More than five hundred thousand people have been massacred; two and a half million have been displaced and hungry; countless women and girl systematically attacked, children maimed and left orphaned. The United States Government has done absolutely nothing to bring the horror and bloodshed to a halt. Please join me in helping the victims of genocide in Darfur. Here are seven things you can do to help:
2 – Spread the word to everyone you know what is going on there, so that there is no one left who can say when millions of have fallen, ‘I didn’t know.” 3 – Learn more by visiting websites like http://www.darfurinfo.org/oldnews.html, http://www.savedarfur.org/ and http://www.darfurgenocide.org/ to find out detailed information about what’s going on there and sign up for their action lists. 4 – Write your local newspapers, magazines, and radio and television stations and let them know that you want them to cover the progress of the situation there and what the United States government and world-wide efforts are doing to stop the genocide. 5 – Participate in activities that promote awareness of the situation and positive action from our government and theirs. Go to the web sites above for suggestions. 6 – Send your letters to President Barack Obama, Vice president Joseph Biden or Secretary of State Hilary Clinton to: The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20500, or your emails to: comments@whitehouse.gov, president@whitehouse.gov or vice_president@whitehouse.gov. Find contact information for your representatives in congress at http://www.house.gov/writerep/, and for your representatives in the senate at http://www.senate.gov/general/contact_information/senators_cfm.cfm. 7 - Donate to organizations like U.S. Fund for UNICEF, 333 East 38th Street, New York, NY 10016; Res Publica, Darfur Advocacy Project, 25 Washington Street, 4th Floor, New York, NY 11201; or Save Darfur Coalition, Post Office Box 18176, Washington, DC 20036.
